Director's Notes

It’s been a great start to the new school year! The classrooms have been a flurry of activity as the children have been getting to know each other doing All About Me projects and lots of art, sensory, science and music activities.  There have been several rainy days lately but that’s not stopping the play at MDO! We set up large and fine motor activities in the upstairs room and the kids have a blast.  The parachute and the magnet table have been big hits.  Senora Claudia has been teaching Spanish weekly to the 3s, 4s, and Pre-K.  They have been learning numbers, letters, colors, greetings and how to describe the weather.  Ms. Gretchen from Toco Hills library read to the kids in September and she will come again at the end of October.

I hope by now everyone has settled into a school routine.  Susie and I are finally into a groove.  We are putting faces with names and getting to know everyone.  In September we were busy collecting required forms, immunizations, tuition, activities fees, and even some May escrow payments.  It has been a lot to sort through so thank you for your patience. If you have any of these things outstanding, please contact us as soon as possible.

October is such a fun month with pumpkins, apples, scarecrows and Halloween!  It’s also a colorful time at MDO.  Ms. Lisa’s tree has orange leaves and other colored leaves painted by the children are hanging around. The bulletin board decorated by Ms. Kim and Ms. Giselle features some adorable scarecrows and leaves created by the 3s.  October is also Fire Safety Month, so we will be talking about fire safety and will have a fire drill on Monday, Oct. 19th.   We will also have an educational visit to from DeKalb Fire Department on Thursday, Oct. 22nd.

Speech therapist Lisa Czech will be performing speech and language screenings on Friday, Oct. 16th and we will email the information prior to the date. The Original Works Fundraiser art will go home on Tuesday, Oct. 20th and orders for purchases should be returned by Tuesday, Oct. 27th.   Art made by your children makes great holiday gifts!

Thanks to Pre-K for being the Laundry Fairies in September!  The October Laundry Fairies are the Turning 4s, so please see Ms. Lisa’s laundry calendar to sign up for your days.

Classroom enrichment is very important to me and I am excited that Holly Kurtz and Steffanie Hafele are the new Co-Enrichment Coordinators. They will coordinate visits by special guests and other fun activities.  New this year for enrichment is our Parent Sharing Program (PSP) - parents sign up to host an activity or share a talent or skill with the children.  If you play a musical instrument, love science, crafting or cooking, or would like to share something about your cultural background – we need you! Even if you don’t have something in mind, we need parents for the PSP pool to help with activities we initiate.  No need to be shy – preschoolers are an easy audience :). Our first PSP activity is making homemade applesauce on Friday, Oct. 23rd, and Holly will be hosting!

Fall is a beautiful season for playing outside and I hope everyone plans family time for this.  Hiking is one of my family’s favorite things to do so you can bet we will be out and about!  If you collect nature items on your walkabouts, please bring items in to share.

Happy Fall Y’all!
Patty Butler

Letter from the Chair

Hey everyone! Wow, am I glad it's October. School is underway, our daily routine has been reestablished, and best of all - it's finally cool enough to play outside! Fall is absolutely my favorite season, and it's always a fun time of year at MDO. I'd like to send a special Thank You to Patty, our fantastic Director, for organizing the pumpkin patch in the hallway. Walking past it is such a lovely way to start the day, and I know Lochlan and Aria can't wait to bring in special little gourds to add to the display. Remember to pick out gourds for your own little ones next time you're at the market so they can bring them in!

Another Thank You goes to Janna Charoenlap, our volunteer Newsletter Editor. She has tackled the new online format splendidly, and we are so grateful for her hard work. If you have any feedback regarding the Newsletter, or issues viewing it, please let her know.

Coming up on Friday, October 23rd, we have our first social outing of the year, organized by our outstanding Volunteer Coordinator, Chaffraix Rowles: Mom's Night Out at Venkman's at 8pm! All the Board moms will be there, so there's a 90% chance it will be awesome and a 10% chance it will be mind-blowingly magnificent. Even if you can only come for a little while, it will be worth getting out of the house to relax a little with your fellow moms. For more details, see the event page on Facebook. Don't worry, Dads, we're cooking up an outing for the guys as well! Note: No estimation of magnificence probability can be made at this time.

It didn't make it onto all of the art calendars that went home this month, so take note - instead of having a Spirit Night this month, we're having a Spirit WEEK! From Monday, October 26th through Sunday, November 1st, both Doc Chey's and Osteria 832 will donate 25% of profits if you mention MDO when you order. Keep an eye on Facebook to see when others are going if you want to meet up with other MDO families!

As you've noticed from the flyers, emails, and exclamations, we are deep into preparations for our major fundraiser of the year: the "Night on the Red Carpet" Auction on Thursday, November 19th, from 7-10 pm. Trust me, folks, this is going to be a night to remember. For a mere $25/person, you get an all-access pass to the social event of the season, including heavy hors d'oeuvres, two drink tickets, and the chance to win prizes and bid on ridiculous deals. A paparazzo will be photographing arrivals and we'll have music, raffles, a full bar, and more. Be on the look-out for an email from your Room Rep with information on how you can help to make this event as lucrative as possible for the school by soliciting donations, advertising it in your circles, and contributing to class wine cellars. Tickets will be on sale all this week at drop-off and pick-up. Book your babysitter now to be sure you can come!

I leave you with your Inspirational Parenting Quote of the month:

“All of us have moments in our lives that test our courage. Taking children into a house with a white carpet is one of them. ” - Erma Bombeck

Sincerely,
Melody Crowley

Teacher Feature

Catherine Holton, Spring 2s Teacher
Catherine received her Bachelor of Arts degrees in French and Art History from Sewanee, The University of the South and her M.ed, in School Library Media from The University of West Georgia. Catherine has been teaching for seven years, and this is her first year at MDO.  Her three children attended MDO though, so she's been part of the family for a while!

What do you love most about being a part of the school? I love that MDO is such a nurturing place for the children, parents and teachers.

What made you choose to be a teacher at MDO? I have such fond memories of my own children at MDO that it was an easy decision to want to return as a teacher.

What are some of your favorite things to do with the kids? Anything crafty, Legos and magna tiles, read Apple Picking Time, or sing "All the leaves are falling down" and "5 little pumpkins."

What's something fun about you we might not know? I grew up in Alabama, but went to a boarding school in Massachusetts for high school.

What's your favorite thing to do in your free time?  What is free time? LOL

Parent Volunteer of the Month

Lissy Pearson, Mother of twins Charlotte & Henry in the Spring 3s Class. Lissy is currently the Room Rep for Spring 3s and is volunteering for this year's auction fundraiser event. This is the Pearson family's first year at MDO, and in Atlanta. They just moved to Georgia this summer from Utah.

What's your favorite thing to do in your free time? I love cooking with/for my family and have recently started an Instagram account @mintedbliss to help inspire families with picky eaters! Good coffee, red wine, and daily sweat sessions are my go-to. Oh, and those rare moments I get to read a magazine....heaven.

What's your favorite guilty pleasure? Ice Cream! Who can't smile while eating ice cream?! Showering alone is a close second...

What's your favorite part of being a mother? Being a mother, especially a twin mother, has shown me how to love another little human more than I thought was possible, that I have much more endurance and stamina that I could have imagined, and true happiness is right in front of me everyday. I am truly blessed and beyond humbled that Charlotte and Henry chose ME to be their mother. And it may or may not have eased my OCD... Being a mother has really taught me you have to just "let it go!" Looks like Frozen, isn't just for children...

Fall 2s

Fall 2s had a great September. They have all settled in nicely and we are really getting to know one another. We have been working on cleaning up; they are getting really good at this. The children love to sing our clean up song and put their toys in the huge toy basket. They love music; I can't express that enough. We sing songs for almost everything we do.

One song we sing is "put your back on the wall on the wall." The children now know that it is time to line up and get on our shape train! Everyone gets a shape as we count how many friends are here today. All aboard!! Then we make our way to the playground and say, "Choo choo! Ding ding! The two's are coming through!"

Thank you to Akiko Taniguchi for letting the 2s class help celebrate Eito's 2nd birthday. We really enjoyed having a special treat with our friend Eito. Also, thank you parents for all of the supplies you have been sending in. You guys are awesome!

Miss Evelyn

Pre-K

The Pre-K class has had so much fun getting to know each other during the first month of school. We have been hard at work creating art for the classroom.

We studied our reflection in a mirror and drew different expressions. We made paper dolls of ourselves to hang on the bulletin board. We also love to join Ms. Lisa's class for enrichment activities. We have made germ sandwiches during science and practiced yoga during music. I love to start the year with the theme of "All About Me," I've learned so much about each student already but I can't wait to learn even more!

In the month of October we will begin learning about the letters of the alphabet. We will cover one letter each week starting with the letter Aa. We will practice writing the letter in both upper and lower case, identify things that begin with that letter by listening for the sound, and create art representing that letter. I am excited to help your child learn and grow this year!

Ms. Angie

Fall 3s

Our Fall 3s class had a great start to the school year. We are working on letters, numbers, our pincer grasp and learning the daily routines of MDO. We love getting to know all of our new classmates. We are a busy bunch and are always on the go! We love parachute play and all water related activities. Cleaning seashells with paintbrushes dipped in water is one of our favorite morning activities.

In October, we will focus on "fall changes & family." Our class will go on a "leaf hunt" on the playground to look for leaves, pumpkins, acorns, and pine cones. We will also make applesauce and explore the ins & outs of a pumpkin!
